Life Lessons from Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla is one of the most iconic names in all of science and technology. There are many great scientists, but certainly one of the greatest is Nikola Tesla, who is often referred to as “the man who invented the 20th century”. A legendary inventor whose discoveries and creations benefit us multiple times throughout our everyday lives, Tesla is widely considered one of the greatest minds in human history.
I’m going to give you some of his greatest life lessons, which can change your life forever.
“Be alone, that is the secret of invention; be alone, that is when ideas are born.”
These days we’re also impelled by the technological imperative to stay connected. People take laptops on vacation, their smart phones to bed with them. With the constant access to virtual if not actual socialization, experts wonder if we’ve forgotten how to be completely alone, wholly cut off for a time. Some of our best ideas come, not in meetings or through committee, but rather, in solitude. In today’s world of noise and distraction, quiet reflection is to be cherished – producing powerful day dreaming, moments of “what if?” and free thought without limits. Tesla preferred to work alone and allowed his mind to wander. Remote control technology, wireless communication and robotics came from the mind of Tesla, when he was in complete solitude. We use alone time to process our relationships and recalibrate our sense of self. Solitude confirms that we’re more than the sum of our reactions to other people and encounters. In solitude, we return to center. Reserve “alone” time this week and experience great ideas coming to the fore.
“My brain is only a receiver, in the Universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength and inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know that it exists.”
A universal source of Knowledge has always existed, and always will exist throughout eternity. Man has made divisions of a unity, and so we have religion, science, philosophy, art, and literature; but all these in reality are parts or portions of a unity of knowledge which Theosophy calls the Ancient Wisdom. The great minds of the present day, the men of science, the advanced thinkers of religion, the philosophers, artists, and men of letters are all drawing consciously or unconsciously on this universal source of knowledge. They are aided in their efforts by those whose duty it is to help and aid human endeavor, to inspire and enlighten the searching mind, the hungry heart, the aspiring soul. Such helpers are they who have advanced farther than their fellows in evolutionary development, and who have willingly offered themselves in whole-hearted service, life after life, for the benefit of humanity: they can draw consciously upon this source of wisdom and thereby benefit their fellow-men. What this source really is, we don’t really now, nor did Mr. Tesla, but we must understand, that we have the access to this Source, we just need to find the key to reach it.
“What we now want is closer contact and better understanding between individuals and communities all over the Earth, and the elimination of egoism and pride which is always prone to plunge the world into primeval barbarism and strife. Peace can only come as a natural consequence of universal enlightenment.”
Tesla freed his mind of ego, pride and pettiness. He worked for and competed with Thomas Edison and went head to head with Marconi, but fought losing battles because competition was not his forte. Instead, he preferred to focus on ideas, invention and the future, and he wanted others to do the same, believing it would lead to a more peaceful, better world. It’s a concept we should all embrace. This is the reason for Nikola Tesla’s quote: “ don’t care that they stole my idea, I care that they don’t have any of their own.” The Ego is responsible for everything from the breakdown of relationships to creating wars. Nikola Tesla managed to surpass his ego and pride, and focus on creating great inventions for humanity.
“I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success.”
While Tesla did have a laboratory, he seldom made drawings of his ideas. Instead, he would build blueprints in his head through the power of visualization. Today, many psychologists advocate visualization to help us achieve our goals and improve our well- being. World class athletes use their minds to push their bodies. Musicians hear music before they write it. It is said that Tesla could judge the dimensions of an object to a hundredth of an inch. Tell your mind to make mental rehearsals. To practice, picture physical objects and their shapes in your mind’s eye, as Tesla did. Then, envision success. Research shows that playing things out in our head will provide familiarity, and better results, when done in real life. After you visualized all of your goals and desires, all you need to do is to materialize them, and enjoy the great success you accomplished. After doing this, you will really feel the thrill of this success, known it all started in your mind.
“Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his work and accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I have really worked, is mine”
Be okay with being ahead of your times. You may have been ridiculed, questioned and judged on many of your actions or beliefs, but do not be affected by the opinions of others as they simply may not be able to understand them yet. Many great minds, including Tesla, have been ridiculed, accused, ostracized and misunderstood by simple minds. The truth is that Tesla was so ahead of his times, that we are just beginning to understand his real works. So if your ideas are too radical or modern, still pursue them, because the people of the future will thank you.
“Of all things, I liked books best.”
Keep reading, and learning. Reading is still one of the best way to learn new things. There is a treasure chest of both online and offline reading that is available to us all, a lot of times for free, compared to the times of Tesla. Still he learned and read as much as he could. One can argue that there are many different forms of learning and that is true. But reading allows you to use your imagination in a way that you can’t experience while watching a video or listening to an audio. We are in complete control of reading, pausing to contemplate, highlighting things we want to remember, and putting down our own ideas and thoughts on paper. You are only limited by what you can imagine, and the worlds described in books, as well as other peoples views and opinions, will help you expand your understanding of what is possible. By reading a written description of an event or a place, your mind is responsible for creating that image in your head. That is a luxury that technology can still not replace.
“The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter—for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way.”
Have patience and persevere. The worst enemy of success is impatience. The amount of times people have given up right before they were to achieve success is astounding. We all want results and we want results fast. But the real fruits of our labour will show up if we have patience and keep doing what we need to do. In this case, let your goal not be the only thing that drives you but also the journey to your goal. Make the process enjoyable. In addition, you must be open to the fact that the times that you live in may only allow you to achieve a certain amount. You must be accepting of the fact that you can build the basic blocks and then wait for the right time for the magic to happen.
“Invention is the most important product of man’s creative brain. The ultimate purpose is the complete mastery of mind over the material world, the harnessing of human nature to human needs.”
Keep creating. The brain shows the most activity when it is in the process of creation. Do not be afraid to take up a new art form where your imagination is your only limit. Even if your creation exercises do not contribute at all to your ambitions, the act of creation itself will develop your brain in many ways, that can further help in achieving your goals and dreams. Even if you don’t know what to create or invent, you can always do something much simpler, like drawing for example. Art in any way encourages creative thinking and lets you come up with your own unique solutions. Out-of-the-box thinking also stimulates your brain to grow new neurons. Contrary to popular belief, creative thinking does not mean using the right side of your brain. It involves getting both hemispheres of your brain communicating with each other.
“Money does not represent such a value as men have placed upon it. All my money has been invested into experiments with which I have made new discoveries enabling mankind to have a little easier life.”
Money isn’t everything. According to possibly the greatest scientist that lived, money is just a tool to make your and others’ lives better and is not a decider of value or success. Oftentimes, we can get a little too caught up in our obsession with money. While having the funds necessary to live a comfortable life is important, money isn’t everything — and it’s important to remember that. Success is not something that is defined in a certain way and something that could be drawn. Success is pretty much something that you, and only you, define for yourself. Success is something money cannot buy and something that varies from one individual to another. For example, some people define success as taking good care of their families and spending enough time with them, something money can never buy. A common misconception we have in life is that money is equal to success, especially in today’s materialistic world. Money does not always equal success but unfortunately we tend to measure our self-worth when we look at our income sheet. If we look at an individual with a sports car, we say he is more successful than us; however true success is defined by the person themselves as they go through life, exert the effort and remain happy and healthy in every step. Make sure you put your money in good use by perhaps helping others who are less blessed and suffering or in other ways that help contribute to society effectively.
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”
With this incredible quote, Nikola Tesla want’s to tell us, that The whole of the Universe, is energy and each basic element of the known atomic chart consists of energy at different rates of vibration. The difference between any two elements is the difference in both atomic structure and vibration rates.
There is a frequency or vibration of energy that fills the Universe. This energy is not only beneficial, but also essential to all living cells whether human, plant or animal. Man utilizes this energy with his mind. Every thought is transmitted by this energy. Every aspect of life in the physical depends on this basic energy or power of the Universe. Spiritual growth is our only purpose and reason for being alive on earth. Each individual must learn how to utilize this energy for spiritual growth and constructive purposes. Constructive use (positive use) of this energy raises the level of consciousness of man and in turn raises his vibration rate or frequency. Every individual has a different rate of vibration. All of man’s earthly problems are created by his thought projections. What we project from our mind in the form of thoughts, we create and receive. Spiritual growth requires the elimination of all negative thought, which dissipates “the life force” or vital energy.
“All that was great in the past was ridiculed, condemned, combated, suppressed — only to emerge all the more powerfully, all the more triumphantly from the struggle.”
It can be easy to get too wrapped up in other people’s negative perceptions of you. Despite being frequently insulted during his lifetime, Tesla is now known as a legitimate genius and one of the most important human beings to ever exist. The lesson here, is that criticism is something that can help you instead of breaking you down. And that it eventually can make you grow in the things you do. The more criticism you receive, the harder you should work, you can maybe say. But you should not and never stop believing in yourself and what you are capable of.
Don’t doubt no matter how hard the criticism or critics are, because without your believe in yourself, you won’t be able to move forward and work harder on something you want to achieve. And if you realize what you want to achieve, you should and would break this barrier to go for it and work harder. And search for new ideas for improving yourself. Break the criticism but never let criticism break you.
“We crave for new sensations but soon become indifferent to them. The wonders of yesterday are today‘s common occurrences.”
On your search for truth, however, taking time to appreciate the little things life offers is also extremely important. Appreciating the little things in life involves focusing our attention on what is pleasurable, nurturing, and sustaining in our lives and away from those events that are annoying, frustrating, or hurtful. It means practicing gratitude for those everyday things that are easy to take for granted or miss altogether. Adopting this outlook won’t stop negative events from occurring, but it may help prevent us from over-emphasising their importance in our lives. Remember to acknowledge the greatness of life regularly.
“Though free to think and act, we are held together, like the stars in the firmament, with ties inseparable. These ties cannot be seen, but we can feel them.”
Ancient spirituality and religions are systems of belief that attempt to explain the human spiritual experience. All religions arise from the illusion of separation, because that is the nature of human experience in the physical form. We experience ourselves as separate beings, separate from each other, separate from “God”, and from the physical Universe. It is impossible from this viewpoint of separation to perceive the true nature of physical life experience, who we really are, and the life force in everything that we have labeled “God”. As science looks deeper into the nature of matter and energy, it becomes evident that the physical world is in fact non-physical, or metaphysical. The line between physical and spiritual (non-physical) is being erased. As we dig deeper into the true nature of “reality” it is becoming clear that the separation of body, mind, and spirit is an illusion. These are all simply aspects of one thing or being. Spiritual metaphysics takes us closer to understanding and applying this information in our everyday lives.
“Life is and will ever remain an equation incapable of solution, but it contains certain known factors.”
No matter how hard we try, we will never know everything there is to know. Accepting that is incredibly important in order to lead a fulfilling life. Life is a mystery and we must find our own purpose for existing in this physical realm, and try to fulfill it. No matter how much we strive to understand the meaning of our existence, we will never know everything, and there will always be unknown factors.
“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.”
Although we may perceive the world and everything within it to be physical or material, Quantum Physics states that everything that exists in the whole universe is made up of energy that constantly flows and changes form. This has been proven many times by Nobel Prize award winning scientists, however because we are used to thinking about ourselves, and everything in the universe as tangible, it can be quite difficult to accept that everything is just energy. If we stop clinging in the physical, and dive deep in the non-physical phenomena, we will really progress more in one decade, than in all the previous centuries of our existence.
“It is paradoxical, yet true, to say, that the more we know, the more ignorant we become in the absolute sense, for it is only through enlightenment that we become conscious of our limitations.”
With wisdom comes humility. With humility comes the acknowledgement that we can’t, and for the near future, we won’t be able to assimilate all the knowledge and absolute truths about anything and/or everything. Every answer we uncover, raises 5 more new questions. No matter how knowledge we receive, we will forever be ignorant, because the knowledge, and secrets of the Universe, are infinite, and one will never possess all of this secret knowledge. We must become conscious of our limitations, and like Nikola Tesla stated, we can achieve that, only through enlightenment.
“Everyone should consider his body as a priceless gift from one whom he loves above all, a marvelous work of art, of indescribable beauty, and mystery beyond human conception, and so delicate that a word, a breath, a look, nay, a thought may injure it.”
When you begin to treat your body with the same reverence you might treat a temple, really great things will begin to happen for you. You will become more aware of what you eat and drink, you will notice how you breathe and perhaps most importantly you will develop the capacity for self-correction. Treating the body like a temple means being aware enough to know what it needs and what it doesn’t. Think of how your demeanor shifts if you enter a church, temple, synagogue or other holy place. Your voice lowers and you have a heightened sense of reverence and awareness. If we can develop this same attitude regarding the body, we are taking the first steps toward optimal health and toward overcoming addictions of all kinds. With awareness, it is nearly impossible for addiction to survive.
“From childhood I was compelled to concentrate attention upon myself. This caused me much suffering, but to my present view, it was a blessing in disguise for it has taught me to appreciate the inestimable value of introspection in the preservation of life, as well as a means of achievement”
Introspection is Key. When something goes wrong, we must always have the ability to introspect and determine what we can do differently next time to succeed. Often times, people hesitate to take a good honest look at themselves, without resorting to negative self-talk. Introspection on the other hand, is an unbiased look at your actions, words and behaviour and assessing them without the presence of emotion. Be kind but be honest to yourself. Look to yourself and determine your shortcomings and your strengths. Give yourself good advice.
